Nuna is a Denmark-based startup company that has created a unique text and voice based conversational AI designed to help people struggling with depression, anxiety, and stress.

According to information sourced from the World Health Organization, it is estimated that 5% of the global adult population suffers from depression. Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression while anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States, affecting 40 million adults aged 18 and older, or 18.1%  of the population every year.

While mental health therapy has made breakthroughs in the past decades, the long waiting orders in government clinics and the expensiveness of private sessions are discouraging thousands from seeking help.

Nuna, a Denmark-based startup offers a solution. By creating an AI-powered mental health app that provides easily-applicable psychotherapeutic tools, Nuna’s AI program is helping the world overcome sadness, anxiety, depression, and stress.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or short CBT, is the basis of Nuna AI’s program:

“With easily applicable tools rooted in CBT and other proven methods, Nuna AI helps people structure their thoughts and find new ways of coping in their everyday life. CBT is one of the most evidence-based psychological interventions for the treatment of several psychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety, with 115 studies proving its effectiveness.”

Unlike programs and software following scripted scenarios and responding to keywords rather than the feelings and emotions of people, Nuna AI is relying on volumes of research performed by numerous professionals and is evolving as the conversation progresses.

Nuna boasts a team of well-respected psychologists, psychology students, and researchers that are developing new content for the Nuna AI app. Helmed by Emilie Petersen, Nuna’s psychology department is keeping track of state-of-the-art research in the psychological field of science.

Nuna AI companion is a chatbot equipped with streamlined mood tracking tools, helping its users make steady progress on not only coping, but combating and ultimately overcoming depression, anxiety, stress, and other mental health-related problems. According to the chatbot’s developers, the purpose of Nuna AI is:

“Nuna helps you track your daily mood and learn more about yourself. Nuna asks you how you’re doing in the brief daily conversations. By checking in with yourself like this, you’ll not only be able to find patterns in your mental health but also map out the things that make you feel good – and not so good. You’ll also get useful and relevant therapeutic tools that can help you better manage the given situation you’re in, journal the things you’re grateful for, and track your feelings.”

The main psychological treatment methods Nuna is built on are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-based CBT, and Positive Psychology. This chatbot was designed to elevate the mood of people using the app, but also locate the roots of sadness, depression, and other mental health issues.

Nuna is also releasing a voice-based check-in flow next month that will allow users to simply voice their feelings to Nuna. Nuna will then process those feelings and help you with relevant CBT tools.

Security is at the core of the Nuna tech team’s concerns and all conversations are end-to-end encrypted and can only be accessed by the user themselves, not even by the Nuna team.
