The Accidental Oligarch: A Ukrainian Saga, an historical fiction account of the 2014 EuroMaidan Revolution of Dignity, recounts the political context of the events leading up to Russia’s takeover of Crimea and the Donbass in Eastern Ukraine, the beginning of Russia’s intervention. It is authored by David Hoffman whose family is from a small town outside Lviv, Ukraine.  All proceeds from the book are being donated to Internews to support Ukrainian journalists.

The Accidental Oligarch: A Ukrainian Saga portrays the real history of the roots of Ukraine’s war of resistance.  It’s a riveting retelling of the heroism of ordinary Ukrainian citizens whose thirst for democracy and freedom refused to be quenched. It features real life characters such as Volodymyr Zelensky who is now Ukraine’s embattled President, Paul Manafort, Oleg Daripaska and others whose names have become familiar to American audiences. By turning the news into a fictional thriller, Hoffman has brought to life the context, the color and suspense of these history changing events.

David Hoffman, Author

“I wrote the novel to portray the heroism of the Ukrainian people in the Revolution of Dignity which provoked Russia’s invasion and occupation of parts of the country,” Hoffman said. “I believe an historical fiction thriller is the best way to provide a context for understanding the current fighting.”

This is both a literary page turner and an accurate portrayal of Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression. After reading the book, former Undersecretary of State, Tara Sonenshine, wrote, “This fictional account of the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, should make Putin tremble. After reading it, I realized Ukrainians will never surrender. I couldn’t put it down.”

Based on a true story, a zookeeper at the Kyiv Zoo withdraws a billion dollars from a shell company that used his ID as its fake director, thus becoming the “accidental oligarch.”  From Cyprus, Panama, Prague, London and ultimately the streets of Kyiv, he wages war with the corrupt oligarch who is the principal backer of the then President and increasingly with the Russian-backed regime.  The novel climaxes during the Euromaidan Revolution of Dignity where the hero and his band of savvy saboteurs fight the oligarch, the government, a cabal of mobsters and moguls, and stealth Russian forces, as they strive to save themselves and the battered country they believe in.

Hoffman, is the Founder of Internews, the largest media development NGO in the world, working in more than 100 countries. Following Ukraine’s independence from Russia in 1991, Hoffman led Internews’ work in Ukraine.  He and his colleagues developed a broad independent media sector there that included the first independent television stations, the first national satellite TV network and the first news agency. Today, Internews Ukraine, is the primary NGO working to support a free and independent press in the country.

Prior to writing this book, Hoffman authored six books and has been a contributor to The New York Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and other publications. He founded Internews in 1982, won an Emmy Award for the Capital-to-Capital series of US-Russian dialogues broadcast on ABC, and was the first recipient of the European Commission Humanitarian Award for human rights broadcasting.
