The birth of reggaeton arrives on TV as an independent project that portrays the birth in the 90s of the urban musical genre that conquered the world and the great classics of the “old school” of the genre

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Feb 10, 2020 – DJ Negro, DJ Playero, DJ Eric, Vico C, are names of legendary artists who together became the “old school” of a musical genre that would put Puerto Rico in the playlists of discos and radios worldwide: Reggaeton. Now, a TV series recreates the moments when these precursors created the first songs that would conquer the planet.

“Underground” is the series, a 6-chapters drama that accurately portrays the history of the phenomenon that everyone knows today as urban music. In each chapter, you’ll witness in a front-row seat how, during the 90s, a group of young Puerto Ricans, DJs, and singers, created this musical concept that revolutionized the world. You will see how that road was full of obstacles, having to face misunderstanding, government censorship, lack of financial resources and crime. It also recalls how the record companies, which today fight each other to have the interpreters of the moment in their catalogs, at the beginning of the “underground” or reggaeton movement closed their doors and ignored their exploits.

“Underground” captures the rise of figures such as DJ Negro, DJ Playero, DJ Eric, Vico C, Ivy Queen, Don Chezina, Las Guanábanas, and Polaco, among many others. They sowed the seed of the so-called “Old School” leaving a mark indelible in musical history, and that still endures stronger than ever. Of course, their exploits would not be perfectly told without the music that marked that era. Therefore, “The songs popularized in the 90s are framed in each of the shocking scenes of the series,” said producer and director David Impelluso.

Impelluso stressed that “the ‘underground’, which was later baptized as reggaeton and today is known as urban music, beat all forecasts and became the most important Latin music style. So much has been the rise of the movement that it is very common for pentagram stars of other genres to record with urban talents. The viewers will definitely live in this series how young people full of dreams changed the history of music.”

Along with Impelluso, also stand out in the production of this great project Roberto Sueiro, Virginia Romero and Viviana Torres. They took care of every detail so that this inspirational story is an example for all generations because dreams are fulfilled with passion, discipline, vocation and work.

The series features a formidable cast headed by Shalim Ortiz, Virginia Romero, Carlos Calderón, Nathanael Morales, Riky Josué, Jerry Segarra, Mariana Quiles, Cecilia Argüelles and Carlos Esteban Fonseca. Along with them Israel Solla, Kevin Pérez, Ana Salgado, Charlee Way, Suhey Delgado, Carla Malavé, Leishka Flores, Daniel Alicea, Gabriel Alejandro, Raphy Flores, Natalia Lugo and Ramir Delgado, among others.

The original songs are in charge of Jounsse and El Fara, the incidental music is by Lenny 357 and DJ Klassik, in addition to a huge repertoire composed of many of the great successes of Reggaeton of The Old School.

“Underground” arrives on the screens at the same time that DJ Black, DJ Playero and DJ Eric, now known as Los Fathers del Reggaeton, got together to produce music and announced their first joint production, “Puesta Pal Perreo”. Underground will be available on February 20th for Amazon Prime subscribers in the United States, including Puerto Rico, and very soon through several digital streaming options in Latin America.
